This rare Agarwood malaccensis (Oud) essential oil was personally sourced during a recent trip to Thailand in May - June 2024. The Wild Malaccensis, Vintage 1989, is a true rarity with limited availability. It is an exceptional find that exudes an irreplaceable and unique allure. This exquisite agarwood (oud) oil was distilled 35 years ago from an 85-year-old wild tree, carefully sealed, and left to mature, resulting in an oil that today is nothing short of a treasure. Its rich, dark hue and thick, molasses-like consistency allow it to permeate deeply, invoking a profound spiritual experience from the very first scent. This oil, having been aged 35 years, can be cherished in the present and for many years to come. This exceptional oil is a valuable addition to any serious collector's inventory.
The Aguilaria malaccensis tree is very scarce in the wild nowadays. This 1989 vintage oil comes from a tree identified and tagged 85 years ago on the distiller's family land, which has been in their possession for many generations. The family has been growing and distilling agarwood for over 100 years, passing down the knowledge from father to son. They have a large landholding with trees ranging from young to over 100 years old, from which this exceptional oil originates. Their cultivation method is entirely organic, although it is not officially certified as organic. What sets this oil apart from others obtained from trees on the plantation is that it comes from an older tree that has been on the plantation for 85 years and was not manually inoculated. While some of their trees are manually inoculated, older trees (35+ years) are left to grow naturally. The plantation has expanded over the past century to cover over 200,000 trees across its 400-acre land.
This is an exquisite and extremely rare Agarwood (Oud) oil from the first distillation (Grade I) of naturally occurring dark resinous Aquilaria malaccensis heartwood. The resinous heartwood from an 85-year-old tree was distilled, followed by the precious resulting oil being capped for curing (aging) in 1989. The premiere quality Agarwood (Oud) comes from the first distillation known as Grade I. Thailand is known for rare and extremely high-quality aged Grade I Aquilaria malaccensis oil, which is one that we are delighted to have been able to source. The efficacy of this aged Grade I Agarwood oil is unmistakable and undeniable; needless to say, we guarantee its authenticity and sublime aromatic quality.

A study involving the screening of anticancer activity from agarwood essential oil concluded that "based on the simple screening procedures (cell viability assay and cell attachment assay) as well as cytotoxicity assay (SRB assay), AEO was observed to possess anticancer activity towards MCF-7 breast cancer cells. The findings support the traditional uses of AEO further in treating inflammatory-related diseases. As such, this warrants further research to investigate the mechanism of actions of the AEO for better understanding and positioning the essential oil as a potential remedy for cancer." Agarwood Facts: Also known as Oud, Aloeswood, Agar, Oudh, and Oodh, premium Agarwood oil is the result of the aquilaria tree becoming infected with a type of mold. In average growth, the heartwood of the aquilaria tree is relatively light, pale-colored, and barely aromatic. Only after the mold invades the heartwood and progresses does the tree produce a dark aromatic resin in a defensive response to the parasitic mold attack. The result of the naturally occurring defensive mechanism culminates with the heartwood becoming very dense, dark, and resin-embedded. The parasitic infection and subsequent decomposition is a prolonged process that can take several hundred years in a natural habitat.
Pure Agarwood oil from wild harvested resinous embedded wood is scarce and quite expensive. The tree's age, quality, density of the resinous wood, and the oil's age are all factors in the oil's resulting price. Mass indiscriminate tree harvesting for precious Agarwood oil production, particularly over the past thirty years, severely depleted natural resources. The demand for high-quality agarwood from fine perfumeries and negligence in replanting resulted in premium-quality wildcrafted agarwood oil becoming extremely rare. Ecologically sound practices have been established by plantations to replant, allowing trees to grow to maturity, but as you can imagine, this is also a slow and arduous task.
One must exercise caution when purchasing Agarwood oil due to inferior oil production from lighter-colored wood of the aquilaria tree in unscrupulous attempts to meet demand. True Agarwood oil from dark, wild-harvested, resin-embedded Aquilaria malaccensis heartwood is a treasured find.
