Also known as Jatamansi, Nard and Himalayan Nard, this Blue Spikenard premium quality essential oil is a distinctive turquoise blue color, with soft pungent notes associated with Valerian yet is slightly sweeter than our
Spikenard Green essential oil. The chemist that provides our GCMS tells us that the blue color of this oil is natural occurring and is the result of trace amounts of an azulene constituent. Azulenes give essential oils their blue color (for example Chamomile German Blue, Blue Cypress, Blue Tansy, Yarrow). For natural perfumery we highly recommend Spikenard Blue because of its subtle Valerian and sweeter than standard Spikenard aromatic notes. Wildcrafted and sustainably produced; the distiller has an ongoing replanting project that not only provides employment to local Nepalese villagers but also ensures this botanical increases in population in its native habitat.
Spikenard is a sacred oil of ancient repute to encourage devotion, promote relaxation, open the mind during meditation, and spiritual anointing. In the biblical verse John 12:3 it is said that Spikenard oil was used by Mary to anoint Jesus' feet: "Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume."
Some say Spikenard shares similar aromatic notes with Valerian. Spikenard and Valerian are close relatives and do have similar aroma from Valencene and Valerinic acid; Spikenard Blue is much sweeter, earthy and far less pungent than Spikenard Green. There are synthetic 'fantasy aromas' of Spikenard that have a deep woody resinous smell and should not be confused with pure Spikenard essential oil. Should you be unfamiliar with how true Spikenard should smell we encourage you to sample first. Because this Spikenard Blue is slightly sweeter and less pungent than our Spikenard Green we find it an exceptional specimen for perfumery and product scent formulations.
Aroma-therapeutically Spikenard is said to help with migraine headaches, insomnia, and anxiety. The antioxidant effects of Spikenard are claimed beneficial in mature skin care creams, lotions, toners and tonics. Spikenard is an anti-spasmodic recommended for use in massage.
