This absolute is solvent extracted opposed to our organic
Rose Otto (Bulgarian) processed by steam distillation that is a pure essential oil. Slightly thick and deep orange reddish in color, this absolute has a very strong sweet mature floral smooth honey scent.
Many solvent extracted specimens of Rose damascena absolute we sampled displayed aromatic oddities best described as fermented, wine like, and some even with a peculiar sour note that lingered even after dry down. One whiff of the absolute selected here prompted immediate enquiry of the supplier to confirm whether it was indeed solvent extracted or hexane free. For a solvent extracted Rose Bulgarian to so clearly not have any aromatic tell-tale signs of solvent extraction is like finding a needle in a haystack! This Rose absolute simply fails to disappoint and is a natural perfumer's dream.
In perfume blends is best to err on the side of frugality remembering that less is more with this particular absolute! Because of its highly concentrated scent is advised to dilute in order to reveal and appreciate all aromatic notes.
Rose is historically an expensive oil to produce because the extraction process requires several thousand pounds of rose petals to obtain just one ounce of oil. The process is very labor-intensive, with harvesting of the flowers done by hand before sunrise and processing completed on the same day.
Although rather costly compared to other Rose absolutes we sampled, the pristine aromatic quality is worth every cent! We were fortunate to obtain a small amount from a larger shipment headed to a friend in the perfume industry in Grasse, France.
