Like white and blue lotus oils (although technically the blue flower is a water lily of species caerulea and all true lotus flowers are from species nucifera) the initial accords are slightly earthy and pungent, yet Pink Lotus sheds them very quickly to reveal a unique very sweet floral heart. Pink Lotus oil is the most floral of all the three. Its floral aspect is a quiet aquatic floral, majestic and regal, rather than lush sensual florals like Ylang Ylang or Jasmine grandiflorum. There is profound clarity and freshness with slightly earthy herbal back notes. Although these herbal notes fade to make the floral heart stand out, they are always in the background, giving strength to the delicate beauty of the flower, much like the strong stem holding a lotus blossom.
Making pure lotus absolute is a rather arduous task because waxy petals produce little absolute. About 75,000-100,000 pink blossoms are needed to make one kilo of absolute, which as you might image, is a great amount of flowers. Each flower is handpicked from the ponds on the third day after the blossoms open. There is a rapidly closing window of harvest time, waiting only a couple more days will render a weaker fragrance. After the flowers are picked, they are separated from the stem and loaded into the extracting units. Several washings are required in order to remove the waves, pigment and essential oil from the flowers. The resulting product is called concrete, and it requires treatments to be separate from the solvent. Before the absolute is obtained, a delicate painstaking process of chilling, filtering and vacuum distilling of the solvent from the absolute must be undertaken.
