Kunzea is an essential oil derived from the terminal branches of Kunzea ambigua (Myrtaceae family), from sustainable wild growing plants in Southern New South Wales, Australia.
Kunzea ambigua is also known as 'White Cloud' or 'White Kunzea', and is a shrub that can grow up to three meters tall and has an abundance of white or pink flowers. It is a native plant from the coolest coastal areas of Australia (Tasmania, Victoria and Southern New South Wales) and grows profusely in the wild particularly in Tasmania and the Bass Strait islands.
The anti-insect properties of Kunzea are well known, ever since native animals were observed to often be sleeping under Kunzea plants seeking relief from ticks and other parasites- hence it's common/popular name of 'Tick Bush'.
Kunzea essential oil has a grouping of 5 different sesquiterpene compounds, which is quite unusual for an essential oil produced from the Myrtaceae family, and our current batch is particularly high in Viridiflorol (15.22%).
Kunzea is a relatively new essential oil on the market, as with many plants of the Myrtaceae family, Kunzea can produce many varied essential oil chemotypes.
In recent years many positive reports have been filed relative to the therapeutic benefits of Kunzea essential oil over a vast number of common complaints such as for the temporary relief from the pain of rheumatism and arthritis and other general muscular aches and pains, relief from the symptoms of influenza, nervous tension, stress and mild anxiety.
Kunzea oil has also been found to aid in the healing of and prevention of contusions/bruising. If applied directly to the area after the trauma and before bruising has started, or has only just begun, the development of the bruise can be prevented, which is somewhat similar to the effects of another excellent essential oil called
Helichrysum italicum which can be used in tandem with Kunzea, then added at a 10% or higher concentration to Arnica infused oil or perhaps
Foraha (Tamanu). Either of these two carrier oils are very useful in breaking down the leaked blood that causes such discoloration seen in contusions/bruises and sprains, and could be an essential addition to your first aid kit.
