Our Hops essential oil is a pure steam-distilled grown and produced in the USA and has a strong, pungent aroma with green, herbaceous, and citrus notes that may be described by some as garlic or valerian-type notes. In perfumery, Hops offers a unique bitter-green note that adds an uplifting brightness to pine, Fougere, citrus (particularly lime), and aldehydic perfume bases. This was stated by Steffan Arctander, a renowned perfumer. To fully appreciate its unique aroma, Hops should always be used in very low dilution (approximately 1 drop per 30mL).
In aromatherapy, Hops essential oil is known for its therapeutic properties, which include being antimicrobial, astringent, calmative, carminative, emollient, nervine, soporific, and spasmolytic. This makes it a versatile oil with various therapeutic uses, including for neuralgia, bruising, analgesic, menstrual problems, menopausal symptoms, insomnia, coughs, stress-related asthma, stress-related digestive conditions, nervousness, stress, and tension. Due to its sedative qualities, pillows containing hops are currently sold worldwide as sleep aids. Additionally, blending a few drops of Hops essential oil with Valerian or Chamomile Roman can create a marvelous sleep aid blend that can help calm, relax, and aid those with insomnia.
Hops essential oil is highly microbial, making it an excellent choice for formulating natural deodorants. While some sources suggest that this oil has estrogenic properties, Tisserand, a renowned aromatherapy expert, stated that "although the plant contains estrogenic substances (Bradley 1992), no evidence could be found either for their presence in the essential oil or for a hormone-like activity in the oil." For this reason, we have not included estrogenic in the list of aromatherapy uses or benefits. While this may be a subject of debate, we rely on the writings of Tisserand until alternative verifiable data is published.
