Our pure Hops steam distilled essential oil contains no carrier oil. Hops Co2 extracted oils are often standardized in carrier oil such as sunflower and immediately noticeable by lessor cost. The aroma of this USA grown and produced extract is strong and pungent with green, herbaceous and citrus notes that may be described by some as garlic or valerian type notes yet in perfumery Hops offers a bitter-green note that adds a unique dimension of uplifting brightness in pine, fougere, citrus (particularly lime), and aldehydic perfume bases, so says Steffan Arctander. Hops is aromatically strong and in order to fully appreciate its unique aroma it should always be used in extremely low dilution (approx 1 drop per 30mL).
In aromatherapy the therapeutic properties of Hops essential oil are noted as antimicrobial, astringent, calmative, carminative, emollient, nervine, soporific, and spasmolytic with therapeutic uses for neuralgia, bruising, analgesic, menstrual problems, menopausal symptoms, insomnia, coughs, stress-related asthma, stress-related digestive conditions, nervousness, stress, and tension. Known for its sedative qualities, pillows containing hops are currently sold across the world as a sleep aid although it's more reasonable that a pillow spray containing a few drops of Hops essential oil may just be the answer to help calm, relax, and alleviate insomnia; trying blending with
Valerian or
Chamomile Roman for a marvelous sleep aid blend.
Because Hops is highly microbial it should be considered in formulating natural deodorants. Additionally, although some sources reference this oil having estrogenic properties, according to Tisserand "although the plant contains estrogenic substances (Bradley 1992), no evidence could be found either for their presence in the essential oil, or for a hormone-like activity in the oil." For this reason we have not included estrogenic in the list of aromatherapy uses or benefits. This may be a subject of debate, but until verifiable data is published we lean to the writings of Tisserand.
If you are unfamiliar with Hops we recommend purchasing a small sample size prior to opting for a larger size to familiarize yourself with the pungent notes of this essential oil.
