There are no respected aromatherapy benefits noted by reliable sources (Tisserand and Lawless) of Calamus Root essential oil, also known as Sweet Flag, primarily due to high levels of ß-asarone. Julia Lawless states this essential oil should not be used in aromatherapy applications and is best reserved for perfume and spiritual anointing uses.
The long history of Calamus Root includes use by Chinese herbalists, Egyptians, Greeks, European and native American cultures. In Ayurvedic practice it is known as Vacha and in Egypt is revered as an aphrodisiac dating to present day.
Calamus is a spiritual oil mentioned many times in biblical scriptures; most notably Exodus 30: 22-25 as a holy anointing oil ingredient:
22 Moreover the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
23 Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus (*kaneh bosm) two hundred and fifty shekels,
24 And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin:
25 And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.
*The original words “kaneh bosm” (prior to translation) by continuity factor used by the majority of world religions accepts the translation of kaneh bosm as ‘sweet calamus’.
Aromatherapy use: Not recommended. Calamus Root essential oil contains a high level of ß-asarone. This oil is best suited for use in perfume or spiritual holy anointing oils.
